ABUS-Ruhrbike-Festival must be canceled in 2020

Dear Ruhrbiker,

unfortunately we have to cancel our ABUS-Ruhrbike-Festival 2020 due to the current corona situation. We very much regret this step and hope that we will nevertheless do our rounds around the 'Harkortberg' together again in the future. Until then: Stay healthy and keep training hard!

Below you will find the official press release:

Corona is responsible for the cancellation of the international mountainbike race and the German Youth Championships

For many athletes, it should be the highlight of the 2020 season. In addition to the final of the 3 Nations Cup, Wetter (Ruhr) should also be the venue for the German Youth Championships in Olympic Cross Country. But the Corona crisis has thrown the mountainbike calendar into confusion.

It was a difficult decision, which the organizers of the ABUS-Ruhrbike-Festival had to deal with within the last few days. Unfortunately, even the new regulations of the German government in dealing with the Corona crisis did not allow for any planning security for the festival, so that the cancellation of the event could not be avoided. Sponsors and partners support the decision and have already signaled their continued support for mountainbiking in the German Wetter (Ruhr). Together with the functionaries and the presidency of the BDR, various scenarios had been examined, but even a postponement to late autumn could not be realized. "The last few days have once again made it clear that the further development of the current pandemic is not calculable. The health of our athletes, the many volunteers and visitors is our top priority," says organizer Nils Schäfer of the Mountainbike Club Bochum e.V., explaining the decision to cancel.

In the competition for the German champion jersey, the young athletes would have come from all over Germany. In the U17 class alone, this was expected to result in a mass start of around 100 riders. Also, athletes from the Netherlands and Belgium would come to Wetter (Ruhr) for the 3 Nations Cup, including numerous World Cup riders. Last year, for example, the Belgian Men's Elite Champion Jens Schuermans, the Dutch Lotte Koopmans, and the European Junior Champion Lukas Malezsewski were right at the top of the podium.

Nils Schäfer now looks forward to an exciting 2021 season: "We are not going to be discouraged, next year the season will continue! At least in club training, the first steps are possible again and especially our youth is happy to be able to train in small groups again".
